Cat safe plants was something that came straight to mind when in the local garden center looking at new plants. There are so many pretty plants to choose from, but not all are truly safe to have at home. Many house plants are toxic to your furry loved ones, and so it is very important to check which plants are suitable. Check below the best cat safe plants to have at home or on the balcony with this list of 20 cat-friendly plants to choose from.

Why Do Cats Like Plants?

So firstly, why do cats like plants so much? at least the ones I know of!

Some cats love eating plants simply because this may help them with their digestive system, calm them down or simply help with hairballs. It could also be due to a nutritional deficiency, with many outside cats often eating grass.

Other cats simply love plants when they want to play. I know our cat Szila fits right into this one, where she happily play-attacks leaves hanging down from stems and getting her paws into the soil for fun.

So you may first need to see what type of cat you have, and whether they are interested only in playing, or also eating them.

Can I Have A toxic Plant At Home?

If you are a plant lover like me, you will likely want to have some plants that are also toxic for your cat. However we can advise against it. However if you know it’s safe to do so, such as with a cat that isn’t interested in your plants at all, then you need to trust that feeling and test it out. Many cats are not bothered about having plants in the house so it all depends also on your cat and their personality. Else we can also highly advise to keep the toxic ones separate in a place where the cat cannot get to it like in a DIY Ikea greenhouse unit or a separate unaccessible room.

Cat Safe Plants Summary

I hope this post helps with your plant selection while having a furry loved one at home. As much as some plants look amazing, if they are toxic and your cat finds it interesting, its too much of a risk. It all comes down to how active your cat is and how much they play or eat your plants, but we hope you stick to testing your cat with the safe plants first.
